Engines

Most Tridents were originally fitted with lightweight two-stroke Vire or Dolphin engines, most of which have now been replaced with small diesels.  Dolphin engines and spares are still available (see HERE). The only known UK source of spares for the Vire is “Nick the Engineer” in Christchurch Hants.  He can be contacted  HERE.

The 9hp Yanmar 1GM is the most common replacement power unit.  It particularly suits the Trident being light and compact and providing ample power to reach maximum hull speed.  Other replacements include the twin cylinder Beta and the smaller Vetus, Petter and Nanni diesels. A few have fitted the Bukh 10. Outboards are also fitted on stern brackets or in wells cut into the rear of the cockpit. [Click on pictures below to enlarge]
